We are all Greeks and give Greece a chance
A few weeks ago an international movement of support for the people of Greece has been generated. People all around the world, whether Greeks or not, were manifesting for the worst austerity measures ever which were accepted by the Greek government as an engagement in order to shore up its fiscal health. There was a global consciousness that has resulted from the Greek debt crisis.
Demonstrations were planned throughout Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, and many other countries around the world and people used a unique message of solidarity to support the people of Greece. They decided to reply to the call of the Greek people by using the following messages: “we are all Greeks” or “Give Greece a chance!”
As a proud Greek who wants to think positively for the future of my country and its people, I write this post to look at some point at the funny version of the story. The goal of this article is not to talk about politics, the crisis or anything related to that. I just felt the need to present you some funny things about Greeks. Positive thinking is a great way to face the reality especially when it is getting quite hard.
Funny things you should know about Greeks
If we are all Greeks, then hereafter some funny stories about Greek people, their behavior and their habits:
Women love being trendy and “à la mode”
Greek girls pay a lot of attention on their style. They usually put a lot of make up on their face when they go out. When it is spring or summer, they like wearing huge sunglasses. Sometimes they are ugly but nobody tells them the truth! They keep wearing the sunglasses just because it is “in”.
Men usually love looking like tough guys
The common expression for a Greek tough man is “magas”. They usually like playing the role of “I am the man! What’s your problem?”. Sometimes men can easily fight wherever, whenever and with who ever just for the honor.
Generally, they like having a beautiful body with many muscles. That is the reason why, every year when the summer is coming, sports centers are full of people who try to get prepared for the beach and build a good body!
The national sport of Greeks
Most Greeks love going out at the coffee store and drink a coffee with their friends. I can say that this becomes the most common hobby that Greeks have. That is the reason why I decided to call it “our national sport”. When they go out for a coffee they usually stay there for hours. During the coffee activity, Greeks often talk about football, politics or they play “tavli” (Greek Backgammon).
Greek parents and the power of the decision maker
Greek parents…A big chapter! They are different. Really, I mean it.
Greek parents love taking decisions even for the life of their kids. According to Greek parents kids are considered to be kids forever, even at the age of 30 years old!! Sometimes young people want to be independent and they are getting angry at the behavior of their parents. The common excuse that almost all Greek parents Use is the same: “when you have children, you will see!”
In addition to that, Greek parents want to keep their children near them forever, next door or at the building down the street. Sometimes, when kids live more than 10 km away from their parents’ home it is considered to be very far away and the parents are always complaining for the distance.
The “paper” is the most important thing
Parents have always a lot of ambitions for their children. That is normal. What is not so normal is that Greek parents are too much pushy about studies. They have a deep belief that the bachelor degree is the most important and powerful paper you may have. On the other hand, at the end of their studies a lot of young people are unemployed. Many of them find a job that is not related to their studies. It does’t matter anyway. What does matter for parents… Is the paper!!
Greek parents and grand parents are used to having what I would call a “food obsession”. They always try to feed the kids with a pushy way!
Many Greeks think that the whole world is building a conspiracy against Greece. They also think that politicians want their bad. If something wrong is happening, it is always the fault of others. Whenever a new law is coming out to protect the general good, the rights and the weak people, many Greeks believe that the law is against their freedom and they protest!
Smoking: a common habit
Greeks love smoking. Greece is the only country of the Europe where the anti smoking law is not working properly. Politicians tried numerous times to apply a strict law and forbid smoking in public. On the other hand, smokers in Greece believe that the law is against their freedom and the human rights. They always find ways to not apply the law! A common phrase that smokers use in Greece is the following: “There are no passive smokers, there are only antipathetic antismokers!”
